I began my design career in 2012 and by 2013 I was scraping by. Work was scarce and I the few clients who came my way tried skipping out on the bill each time. I had no money, no community and I felt being a designer just wasn't going to work out for me. Though on a warm February night, I was sent a facebook message from my soon to be friend, Sam Lewis. Sam requested that I display my artwork at a new club night in Oakland called "Wormhole Wednesday". He explained That Wormhole focused on "West Coast Electronic Bass Music". I packed my laptop, prints and folding table that night and set out to what would become my new weekly Wednesday night ritual of psychedelic exploration and creative expansion.
Sam helped connect my hackintosh to the venue's Televisions so that I could create a new flier design live for everyone to see. The patrons of Wormhole seemed to thoroughly enjoy watching my psychedelic mess making over sports re-runs. Each week I created a colorful new design which would be transformed into the next week or month's flier.
Wormhole Wednesday is where I truly got my start. I was taken care of, I was appreciated, and I learned the impact design can have on a community. I am forever grateful for Wormhole and Oakland taking me under her wing.
